About

Pinorso is the sartoria of Ryota Matsukuma, born in Fukuoka in 1981, who studied menswear at ESMOD Japon in Tokyo, trained at Ishida Yofukuten, Ishida Sewing and Sartoria Ypsilon, and studied further under Gianni Brazi in Lecce and the Pirozzi workshop in Naples. He founded Pinorso in 2015 inside the Strasburgo group and went independent in 2019, opening a shop and atelier on the third floor of the Konishi Building at 3-1-3 Maizuru, Chuo-ku, Fukuoka, near Akasaka station — begun, he says, with one lockstitch machine and one hand iron. The house ideal is mid-twentieth-century Italian classic: a fully hand-made, three-dimensional garment that is light and flows, with natural shoulders, in cloths from Ariston, Loro Piana, Scabal, Tallia di Delfino and Irish linen, from dinner jackets to summer sports coats. Delivery is about six months, with a basted fitting at two months and a forward fitting at four. Alongside full bespoke there is Owner's Garment, a pattern-order line that keeps the basic hand-made steps in a more efficient process. Matsukuma takes orders in Tokyo and Osaka at regular order sessions — in Osaka at ITAL STYLE Kyomachibori, by appointment — and the Fukuoka shop also hosts visiting makers such as the Florentine bag maker Cisei.
